A hagyom\u00e1nyoknak megfelel\u0151en, az \u00fcnnep elmaradhatatlan r\u00e9sze Magyarorsz\u00e1g lobog\u00f3j\u00e1nak felvon\u00e1sa, a honv\u00e9dtisztek avat\u00e1sa a Kossuth t\u00e9ren, az esti t\u0171zij\u00e1t\u00e9k a Duna-parton, valamint az \u00faj keny\u00e9r \u00e9s az orsz\u00e1g tort\u00e1j\u00e1nak megk\u00f3stol\u00e1sa. Az 1848-as szabads\u00e1gharc lever\u00e9se ut\u00e1n betiltott\u00e1k az \u00fcnnepet, mivel Szent Istv\u00e1n a f\u00fcggetlen magyar \u00e1llam jelk\u00e9pe volt. 1860-ban \u00fcnnepelhett\u00e9k ism\u00e9t, ami val\u00f3s\u00e1gos nemzeti t\u00fcntet\u00e9ss\u00e9 v\u00e1lt. Augusztus 20-\u00e1t 1949 \u00e9s1989 k\u00f6z\u00f6tt a Magyar N\u00e9pk\u00f6zt\u00e1rsas\u00e1g alkotm\u00e1ny\u00e1nak napjak\u00e9nt \u00fcnnepelt\u00e9k, miut\u00e1n az alkotm\u00e1ny hat\u00e1lyba l\u00e9p\u00e9s\u00e9t 1949. augusztus 20-ra id\u0151z\u00edtett\u00e9k.
