A ma élő gibbonfélék legkorábbi ismert őseként azonosították a kutatók azt az újonnan felfedezett emberszabású majmot, amelynek 13 millió éves ősmaradványát India északi részén tárták fel – írja a Magyar Nemzet.
A New York-i Hunter College adjunktusa, Christopher C. Gilbert által felfedezett alsó zápfog egy eddig ismeretlen nemzetségbe és fajba (Kapi ramnagarensis) tartozó egyedé volt.
Csaknem egy évszázad óta ez az első új fosszilis emberszabású majomfaj, amelyet a híres lelőhelyen, Ramnagarban felfedeztek – olvasható a Phys.Org tudományos-ismeretterjesztő hírportálon.
„Azonnal tudtuk, hogy egy főemlős fogáról van szó, de a területen addig feltárt egyetlen főemlőséhez sem hasonlított” – idézte fel a szakember, hozzátéve, hogy a zápfog alakja és mérete alapján az első tippjük az volt, hogy a gibbonfélék egy ősétől származhat.
A Proceedings of the Royal Society B című folyóiratban publikált eredmények szerint a zápfogat még 2015-ben fedezték fel. Azóta számos vizsgálatot elvégeztek rajta annak megerősítéséért, hogy valóban egy eddig ismeretlen faj egyedétől származik, és hogy elhelyezzék az emberszabásúak családfáján.
A szakemberek szerint a Ramnagarban talált fog legkevesebb 5 millió évvel régebbi az eddig ismert legkorábbi gibbonfosszíliánál, betekintést nyújtva a család evolúciójának korai szakaszába.
A szakemberek szerint a zápfog kora bizonyítja, hogy a nagy emberszabású majmok – köztük az orangutánok ősei – és a gibbonfélék Afrikából Ázsiába vándorlása nagyjából azonos időben és útvonalon történt.
