A Neuralink szerint a kezdeti cél az, hogy a bénult emberek képesek legyenek a számítógépes kurzort vagy billentyűzetet kizárólag a gondolataik segítségével irányítani. Musk reményei szerint a „Telepátia” nevű termék lehetővé teszi majd, hogy a Stephen Hawkingéhoz hasonló, bénulást okozó betegséggel élő emberek gyorsabban kommunikáljanak – írta a Sky Newsra hivatkozva az Telex.
Az amerikai Élelmiszer- és Gyógyszerügyi Hivatal (FDA) tavaly engedélyezte a vállalatnak, hogy elvégezze az első kísérletet az implantátum embereken való tesztelésére, ami fontos mérföldkő volt a technológia fejlesztésben. Szeptemberben a Neuralink azt közölte, hogy megkapták az engedélyt az embereken végzett kísérlethez szükséges toborzásra.
A Neuralink már sikeresen beültetett mesterséges intelligenciával ellátott mikrocsipeket egy Pager nevű makákómajom és egy Gertrúd nevű malac agyába is. Pager az implantátummal képes volt az agyával irányítani a Pong nevű videójátékot is, de ahogy korábban írtuk, az erről kiadott videó ellenére azért ezzel kapcsolatban merültek fel kérdések.
Az FDA korábban problémaként hozta fel csipek lítiumaksiját, a csipekben lévő kábelek potenciális agyba jutását és azt is, hogy ki lehet-e majd szedni az implantátumot úgy, hogy közben az agy nem károsodik. A Neuralink ellen ráadásul egy rakás vizsgálat is indult már állatkínzás gyanúja miatt, és az is felmerült, hogy a megfelelő óvintézkedések nélkül szállíthattak majmok agyából kiszedett, patogéneket tartalmazó csipeket.
Elon Musk korábban azt nyilatkozta, hogy az agyba ültethető implantátumokkal egy sor népbetegséget lehetne megoldani az elhízástól a depresszióig, meg lehetne gyógyítani a skizofréniát és az autizmust, és persze a telepátiát is reálisnak tartja. Musk azt is mondta, hogy annyira bízik a technológiában, hogy a saját gyerekei agyába is hajlandó lenne ilyen csipet ültetni.

A PCRM azt is állította, hogy a Neuralink tulajdonában lévő 23 majom közül mindössze hét élte túl a kísérleteket, és került át a Neuralink 2020-as létesítményébe, míg 15 elpusztult. A Neuralink szerint azonban csak nyolcat altattak el.
A cég egy hét elején közzétett blogbejegyzésben elismerte, hogy agychip-technológiájának kipróbálása során nyolc majom elpusztult. A cég védte az állatok kutatásban való felhasználásának lehetőségét, és elutasította azokat az állításokat, amelyek szerint „rendkívüli szenvedésnek” tette ki a majmokat. Hozzátette, hogy „minden újszerű orvosi eszközt és kezelést” állatokon kell kipróbálni, mielőtt etikailag elfogadhatók lennének az embereken.
„A Neuralinknél abszolút elkötelezettek vagyunk az állatokkal való munka mellett a lehető leghumánusabb és etikusabb bánásmóddal” – közölte a cég. „Minden egyes állat felhasználását alaposan megterveztük és átgondoltuk, hogy a tudományos felfedezés és az állatok etikus alkalmazása között egyensúlyt teremtsünk.”
A cég ugyanakkor elismerte, hogy a kísérletek során nyolc állatot el kellett altatni. Elmondták, hogy kettőt „a tervezett befejezési időpontokban kellett a túlvilágra segíteniük, hogy fontos szövettani adatokat gyűjtsenek”, míg hat aggasztó módon műtéti komplikációk, eszközhibák vagy eszközzel kapcsolatos fertőzések következtében pusztult el.
„A Neuralinknél soha nem elégszünk meg az állatok jólétére vonatkozó jelenlegi normákkal, és mindig arra fogjuk ösztönözni magunkat, hogy többet tegyünk azokért az állatokért, amelyek oly sokat tesznek az emberiségért” – zárul a blog, hozzátéve, hogy várják azt a napot, amikor az állatokra már nem lesz szükség a tesztelésben.

Péntek éjjel mutatta be a dél-afrikai befektető Neuralink nevű cége azt az agyi implantátumot, amely a robotszerű ember létrehozása felé egy újabb jelentős lépést jelent – számolt be a hirado.hu.
A YouTube-on, élő videóban mutatta be péntek éjjel Elon Musk az agyi tevékenység olvasását lehetővé tévő implantátumot három hétköznapi disznón. Az első malac, Joyce semmilyen implantátummal nem lett ellátva, de a közönség rajta keresztül megfigyelhette, hogy nagyjából milyen a viselkedése egy élő YouTube-videóban szereplő sertésnek. A kontrollmalac után következett Dorothy, akinek a koponyájába korábban beültették az agyolvasó eszközt, de időközben eltávolították: ezzel is demonstrálta Musk, hogy a beavatkozás visszafordítható és nem okoz semmilyen látható egészségkárosodást. Legvégül a Gertrude névre hallgató disznó következett, két hónapja hordja a különös eszközt. Rajta sem látszódott semmilyen külső nyoma a beavatkozásnak, de a közönség megtekinthette egy monitoron, milyen agyi aktivitást vált ki belőle az elé borított étel.
Musk neurotechnológiai cégét 2016-ban alapította azzal a céllal, hogy létrehozzanak egy olyan interfészt, amely összekapcsolja az emberi agyat és a számítógépet. Bár a Neuralink eszközének dizájnja változott az elmúlt pár hónapban, a végső megvalósításban visszaköszönnek a letisztultság és a visszafordíthatóság szempontjai is. A korábbi tervek szerint az implantátum a fül mögött helyezkedett volna el, de most teljesen a koponyába simul egy onnan eltávolított, apró csontdarab helyére.
Elon Musk elmondása szerint a bemutatóval az volt az elsődleges célja, hogy minél több szakembert tudjon a San Franciscó-i székhelyű Neuralinkhez csábítani. A jelenleg száz főt foglalkoztató cég a jövőben szerinte tízezer fős is lehet. Musk azt is elmondta, hogy az eszközzel végső soron az emberi elmét a mesterséges intelligenciával kívánja idővel integrálni.
A Neuralink pontos felhasználási területeit még nem lehet tudni, de a működőképességét és az egészségre gyakorolt hatását a mostani bemutatóval minden bizonnyal sikerült Musknak bizonyítania a nyilvánosság számára. Az emberen túli világ, vagyis a transzhumán jövő működését előrevetítő megoldás bővítése minden bizonnyal a Musk által vizionált irányokba történik majd meg először, így például az éjjellátás vagy a telepátia lehetőségének megteremtésére koncentrálnak a fejlesztők.
